How is MIL useful in dealing with fake news?

Media and Information Literacy defined by UNESCO as a set of competencies that empower citizens to access, retrieve, understand, evaluate and use, create, as well as share information and media content in all formats, using various tools, in a critical, ethical and effective way, in order to participate and engage in personal, professional and societal activities. (“Media and Information Literacy,” 2013).

In our day to day living we are using social media like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and more social media apps but the question is how Media and Information Literacy is useful in dealing fake news. As we all know that fake news is a number one vital problem in this generation. We have the freedom to choose what we want to choose but not all information is right or true. That’s why Media and Information Literacy has Big 6 Model which help us on how to deal with fake news the first model is Task Definition which means defined information problem and identify information needed, 2nd model is Information Seeking Strategies means determine the possible sources and select the best source, 3rd model is Locate and Access means locate sources and find information within the sources, 4th model is Use of Information means engage with sources and only relevant information, 5th model is Synthesis means present and organize the information that you have gathered, the last model is Evaluate means you must reflect on how you process , gather, and share the information.

As Mary Wollstonecraft said “As technology enters the larger conversation of humanity, students should understand that education is not just simply browsing the internet but emphasizes the concept of progress, which asserts that human beings are capable of improving their constantly changing environment” .That’s why we should be mindful and responsible enough in using technology.

Do Media Shape Us or Do We Shape Media?

Technology is very rampant in the society nowadays which helps the lives of the people easy .Media is a communication channels  which news, entertainment, education, data, or promotional messages are disseminated. There are three types of media which is print, broadcast and new media. In this generation new media is very rampant, most of us using social media like Facebook, Instagram, Youtube, twitter and more social media apps.

In my own perception in life I think media shape us because it affects the lives of the people. Before people listen to the radio and read newspaper to know what is happening in the society but today most of us used gadgets like mobile phone and laptop to know what changes or issues in the society. Aside from that there is a lot of people that lack of sleep because they are still awake until midnight in using social media apps. As a student there’s a tendency that it can distract our studies if we didn’t know how to limit ourselves in using it and use it in a proper way. It can also affect the grades of the students because instead that they study in the evening but they prefer sharing posts, scanning on Facebook, and posting their picture and video. Another reason is even children is now engaged in using social media at an early age. They might forgot the quality of being a kid.

That’s why we should should not forgot the past even there’s a rapid changes in the world. We should give importance to it because this is the reason why there’s new one. Let us limit ourselves in using media especially social media because it can ruin our reputation and dignity as a human.

Introduce Yourself (Example Post)

This is an example post, originally published as part of Blogging University. Enroll in one of our ten programs, and start your blog right.

You’re going to publish a post today. Don’t worry about how your blog looks. Don’t worry if you haven’t given it a name yet, or you’re feeling overwhelmed. Just click the “New Post” button, and tell us why you’re here.

Why do this?

  • Because it gives new readers context. What are you about? Why should they read your blog?
  • Because it will help you focus you own ideas about your blog and what you’d like to do with it.

The post can be short or long, a personal intro to your life or a bloggy mission statement, a manifesto for the future or a simple outline of your the types of things you hope to publish.

To help you get started, here are a few questions:

  • Why are you blogging publicly, rather than keeping a personal journal?
  • What topics do you think you’ll write about?
  • Who would you love to connect with via your blog?
  • If you blog successfully throughout the next year, what would you hope to have accomplished?

You’re not locked into any of this; one of the wonderful things about blogs is how they constantly evolve as we learn, grow, and interact with one another — but it’s good to know where and why you started, and articulating your goals may just give you a few other post ideas.

Can’t think how to get started? Just write the first thing that pops into your head. Anne Lamott, author of a book on writing we love, says that you need to give yourself permission to write a “crappy first draft”. Anne makes a great point — just start writing, and worry about editing it later.

When you’re ready to publish, give your post three to five tags that describe your blog’s focus — writing, photography, fiction, parenting, food, cars, movies, sports, whatever. These tags will help others who care about your topics find you in the Reader. Make sure one of the tags is “zerotohero,” so other new bloggers can find you, too.
