How is MIL useful in dealing with fake news?

Media and Information Literacy defined by UNESCO as a set of competencies that empower citizens to access, retrieve, understand, evaluate and use, create, as well as share information and media content in all formats, using various tools, in a critical, ethical and effective way, in order to participate and engage in personal, professional and societal activities. (“Media and Information Literacy,” 2013).

In our day to day living we are using social media like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and more social media apps but the question is how Media and Information Literacy is useful in dealing fake news. As we all know that fake news is a number one vital problem in this generation. We have the freedom to choose what we want to choose but not all information is right or true. That’s why Media and Information Literacy has Big 6 Model which help us on how to deal with fake news the first model is Task Definition which means defined information problem and identify information needed, 2nd model is Information Seeking Strategies means determine the possible sources and select the best source, 3rd model is Locate and Access means locate sources and find information within the sources, 4th model is Use of Information means engage with sources and only relevant information, 5th model is Synthesis means present and organize the information that you have gathered, the last model is Evaluate means you must reflect on how you process , gather, and share the information.

As Mary Wollstonecraft said “As technology enters the larger conversation of humanity, students should understand that education is not just simply browsing the internet but emphasizes the concept of progress, which asserts that human beings are capable of improving their constantly changing environment” .That’s why we should be mindful and responsible enough in using technology.
